Catalan Modernisme

Art Movement

1888 to 1911     Spain

Catalan Modernisme was a regional art and architectural movement that flourished in Catalonia between 1888 and 1911. It arose in connection with the 1888 Barcelona Universal Exposition and declined after the death of architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner in 1911, which is often seen as a symbolic endpoint. The movement combined European Symbolism and Art Nouveau with a strong Catalan identity, history, and craft tradition. Although Antoni Gaudí’s imaginative architecture is the most well-known, Modernisme also encompassed painting, sculpture, decorative arts, and graphic design. Typical features include organic, flowing forms, allegorical motifs, and an intense, poetic visual language that helped shape a distinct modern Catalan aesthetic.
